After an 8 hour sleep we eventually set off at 9.30am in sunny weather, with a tailwind which unfortunately didn't last all day!! As planned we managed our first coffee stop of the challenge before 12 noon and enjoyed a bacon roll as well. Our Support driver Dad/Geoff did a fine job of leap frogging us throughout the day popping up here and there to offer encouragement and grab a photo or two. After spending the first 3 hours hugging the coastline we eventually started to move inland, and after a long slow road climb during which Jon dropped his sunglasses (fortunately they survived 10 cars driving over and around them before he was able to retrieve them). We stopped for a snack in a village called Beauly and Andy enjoyed his second coffee of the day. By now we were settling into the routine and following a long road climb we looked forward to a long but steep descent into Drumnadrochit, unfortunately this was spoilt by an over zealous police motorcyclist who insisted on descending at 15mph max and we couldn't/chose not to overtake him. We then rode the length on Loch Ness but didn't spot Nessie, however this may have something to do with being focussed solely on the road directly in front of us as we battled into the headwind. We eventually got into Invergarry 8 hours and 46 mins after leaving Helmsdale, burning over 2900 calories throughout the ride which we made ever effort to replenish at dinner tonight!! On returning back to the hostel we discovered Jon had his first puncture, so braved the Scottish Midgies attack and replaced the inner tube before retiring for the night. Glencoe tomorrow, hopefully the fine weather will hold!!
Well done boys. Sounds like FUN!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm concerned at Andy's lack of Tea drinking, is he showing any withdrawal systems? JBT
